The Notebook
"The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks is the embodiment of true love. He uses emotion and diction to captivate the reader's attention and demonstrate the power of true love. Noah and Allie meet when they are young, and Noah becomes head over heels for Allie. Allie comes from a wealthy family who is visiting New Bern, Noah was born and raised there and can only see the rest of his future there. Allie's parents forbade their love because Noah wasn't from as wealthy of a family.
At the end of the summer, Allie moves back to her home and she never sees Noah again. He wrote her daily for a year while her mother intercepted the letters and Allie never received them. Leaving them both heartbroken. Allie moves on to go to Sarah Lawrence and Noah is drafted to the Military. Years later, Allie is a nurse in the infirmary in the military where she meets her future husband, Lon. He is a charmer, and from good money- so of course her parents approve. He proposes to Allie and they are planned to be married in the spring.
All is going as planned until Allie sees the house Noah promised he'd build her when they were young in the newspaper. She is overwhelmed with emotion, and her only option is to go visit him. Her bags packed, and her mind scrambled she leaves straight away not telling Lon her exact plans. Noah and Allie were quite the arguing couple, which doesn't underestimate the arguments anticipated by their encounter.
Their love always prevailed at the end of the day, and as they caught up during their visit, they rekindled their love. This powerful story not only restores the power of love but the power of hope. Allie leaves Lon, and Noah and Allie spend the rest of their lives together with 5 beautiful children.
As Allie gets older, she develops dementia, forcing all of her memories out and not allowing her to remember who her true love is and who her children are. Noah spends the rest of his life telling him their story, no matter how painful it is to hear his wife not recognize him. Sparks created this saddening, heart-feeling, and powerful novel to allow readers to feel the true power of love through Allie and Noah's beautiful story of love.
